Frequently asked questions
With fertility treatments consisting of so many different elements, it is natural to have questions.
So, we have addressed some of the most commonly asked questions to help you in your fertility journey.
There are several fertility clinics around WA, but we work to set ourselves apart from other fertility clinics:
Evidence-based
We keep up-to-date with research both nationally and internationally, so your treatment is backed by science.
An individual approach
We create an individual treatment plan tailored to your specific fertility needs.
A natural way to fertility
We believe that natural paths towards pregnancy should be explored before we try more invasive treatment options.
A highly specialised team
We have a great team of Specialists working with us, including our Medical Director, Professor Roger Hart, who is one of only three WA Specialists with a Certificate of Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility (CREI) qualification. At Fertility Specialists you will only be treated by a Doctor who has specialised in Obstetrics and Gynaecology, so they will truly understand your needs. Some of our Doctors continue to work in Obstetrics, so you can choose to have your fertility treatment with him/her and continue with them to deliver your bundle of joy. This will give you complete continuity of care.
If you would like a consultation with one of our Fertility Specialists, a valid referral from a GP or Specialist is required before we can book your initial appointment. If you have a partner, both of your full names and dates of birth will need to be on the referral, or, you will need separate referrals.
And why do you need a referral? Firstly, our Fertility Specialists need to have a medical contact to correspondend with about your treatment and ongoing care. Also, without an in-date referral, you will not be eligible for any Medicare rebates.
You may require subsequent referrals throughout your fertility treatment as a GP referral is only valid for 12 months and a Specialist referral for only 3 months.
To make an initial appointment, you will need to get a referral from your GP or Specialist for yourself and your partner and send it through to referrals@fertilitywa.com.au. Once we receive the referral and it has been reviewed, the bookings team will call you to arrange the first available appointment.
The initial consultation for a couple will cost $384 with a Medicare rebate of approx. $160, and for a single patient will cost $237 with a Medicare rebate of approx. $80.
At this consult, the Fertility Specialist will go through your history, concerns and issues and advise you and/or you and your partner of any suitable testing required. At this appointment, you will also have a chat to one of the nurses to discuss the tests, possible treatment options and the costings.
You can ask your GP to send you for some preliminary fertility testing. For the female, this would involve some blood tests for AMH and hormone levels and a pelvic ultrasound to determine if any ovarian cysts or fibroids are present. Also, a progesterone level 7 days before her period is due can help confirm that she is ovulating.
A semen analysis and general bloods are the most useful tests for the male partner.
Please note, further testing may be requested once you have seen our Specialist.
You will see your Fertility Specialist at the initial consultation and then at a review appointment to discuss any test results and to develop a treatment plan.
Once the treatment plan has been finalised, your primary contact with the clinic will be with your nursing team. Your Fertility Specialist is in regular contact with your nursing team providing instructions with respect to your ongoing treatment.

Pregnancy tracking
For the female, testing requests may include cycle tracking, hormone testing, pathology screening, pelvic ultrasound, fallopian tube test and AMH blood test.
For the male, testing requests may include semen analysis, pathology screening, Anti-sperm antibodies, DNA fragmentation and testicular biopsy.
After your positive pregnancy test, we can do a weekly blood test to keep track of your hormone levels. We are checking that the pregnancy hormone is rising at the correct rate. We also check your oestrogen and progesterone levels to make sure they support your pregnancy.
At seven weeks, we do an ultrasound to check where the embryo has implanted, and we check the heartbeat and size of your baby.
We will then refer you back to your GP for ongoing management of your care. There are many options for you to consider and your GP will coordinate and guide you.
If you would like to continue with an obstetrician from our fertility clinic, we can help you, simply let us know.
